Thank you to all that racers at this year's US Surfski Championships. Also, a big thank you to our sponsors, especially our premier sponsors: Huki, Ocean Paddlesports, Epic, and PaddleMe Sportswear. The racers and sponsors helped make this year's Champs the U.S. mainland's largest surfski race ever. Although this race is the US Championships, it also doubles as the first race in the 2007-2008 eight race surfski World Rankings. With World Rankings points on the line plus nearly $15,000 in prize money, this year's race attracted nearly all of the world's top surfski racers including reigning world champion Lewis Laughlin from Tahiti and 11-times world champion Oscar Chalupski from South Africa. Other countries represented include Canada, Dubai, Puerto Rico, Hong Kong, Israel, Sweden, and Ireland.

There was exciting racing at the front right from the start of the race, and fans from around with world were able to follow the race with the live coverage on www.surfski.info. A $1000 prize was given to the first racer to reach the Fenn Hotspot buoy two miles into the race. This caused a furious pace right from the starting gun. American Greg Barton, a 2X Olympic Gold Medalist in sprint kayak, claimed the $1000 prize by a boat length. Four different racers lead for a portion of the race before Lewis Laughlin pulled away from Oscar Chalupski a couple miles from the end and then paddled on to the victory.
